Hey Rock Hopper, please tell everyone about my friend Joe. Last week he pulled one off at the skate park and I think he is cool. My sister said he was “her hero” and I think she is kinda right. We were all skating one afternoon and it started to rain a bit. The track was wet but most of us just got to the park from the mall and we didn’t want to go home. In Iowa, the rain is usually brief in the summer so we all chilled a bit and when the storm past, everyone was out riding, grinding and showing some moves. One kid, Sammy, was acting pretty crazy with his board, doing tricks and stunts that were harder than he knew how to do. After Sammy stuck a hard high wall curve with a 360 he tripped into a nose grind and he came off the half pipe too steep and crashed hard onto his head. He didn’t have a helmet on and when his head came back on the cement, it cracked a loud pop that made everyone stop skating. I don’t think anybody moved for what seemed like forever. Then a couple of kids ran over to Sammy to see if he was OK, but he wasn’t moving. When those kids grabbed his arms to move Sammy, Joe yelled out “hey dudes don’t touch him!” Joe ran over and told two kids to slowly move Sammy’s hips and shoulders while he moved Sammy’s head and neck. Joe made Sammy like a board and slowly rolled him onto his back. Joe then checked for breathing and a pulse. The rest of us were like, “What?” Joe said, “Hey I learned CPR at the fire station and teach CPR to the Boy Scout troop I belong to. Sammy may have hurt his neck and he isn’t taking deep breaths!” Joe then directed one kid to call 911, another kid to flag down the nearest adult driving a car, and Joe kept checking Sammy’s breathing and feeling his neck for a heart beat. Sammy started to come around a bit and mumble about the time the paramedics arrived. Joe stepped up, gave them the story and helped put Sammy onto a board before he went off to the hospital. The paramedic told Joe, “You did a great job kid, strong work.” The rest of us were like, “man that was intense!” Joe just picked up his board, looked around and said – “dudes wear your helmets and don’t bleed on this half pipe!” Rock Hopper says; “Joe was cool and the hero of the week, Rock On at Rock Traveler™.com”
